Housing Studies Association Global South Conference Bursary

In partnership with the Housing Studies journal, the Housing Studies Association (HSA) is delighted to announce the launch of the Global South Conference Bursary. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering a global community of housing scholars by supporting participation from researchers who identify as being from the Global South.

About the Bursary

The Global South Conference Bursary aims to remove barriers to participation in HSA’s annual conference for researchers whose work contributes to housing studies and policy debates. We hope to amplify diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences by facilitating their attendance and engagement in housing research and policy discussions. 

The bursary includes:

• Full conference registration.
• A travel and accommodation grant of up to £500. In cases where reasonable expenses exceed this amount, additional funding may be considered at the discretion of the HSA and Housing Studies journal.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Global South Conference Bursary, applicants must:

• Identify as being from the Global South (regardless of current residence).
• Be actively engaged in housing-related research or practice.
• Demonstrate a financial need for support to attend the conference.
• Submit a 300-word abstract of their proposed paper, which should align with the conference themes.
• Provide a brief (up to 500 words) statement detailing how their research contributes to housing studies and why attending the conference would benefit their academic development.

Selection Process

A joint Selection Committee comprising representatives from the Housing Studies Association and Housing Studies journal will oversee the selection process. One bursary will be awarded annually during the programme’s initial three-year term.

Post-Award Requirements

Recipients will be required to contribute a blog post to the HSA website, sharing insights about their research and conference experience.
