NEWS Professor John Flint appointed as Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

The Housing Studies Association is delighted to congratulate Professor John Flint for being appointed a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences following nomination from the Association. The Academy has conferred Fellowship on 58 social scientists, recognised for their contribution to the use of social science for public benefit.

In response to the announcement, Professor Flint said:

“I am most grateful to the Executive Committee of the Housing Studies Association for nominating me to become a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. There is no greater honour than to be recognized by your academic peers in this way and it is incredibly humbling to join many eminent housing studies researchers who have previously become Fellows following the support of the HSA. The track record of the HSA in securing successful nominations for members of the housing research community illustrates the high profile and great esteem in which the HSA is held by the Academy of Social Sciences. I will endeavor to ensure that housing studies continues to be well represented within the wider campaign to ensure that the social sciences are recognized as a vital mechanism for understanding and addressing the key global challenges of our time, in which securing appropriate and affordable housing for all is becoming ever more prominent.”

HSA Chair, Dr Beth Watts, added:

“I’m delighted that Professor Flint has been conferred the award of Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences following nomination by the Housing Studies Association. John has made a leading contribution to social sciences over the last 20 years, spanning the fields of housing, urban studies and social policy, and combining leading academic scholarship with policy and practice impact in the areas of anti-social behaviour, sectarianism, social security and housing. John has made a major contribution to housing studies in his role as managing editor of the journal Housing Studies, sub-panel member for the 2014 and 2021 Research Excellence Framework, and long-term member of the Housing Studies Association. He has maintained a strong and enduring commitment to supporting early career researchers to pursue their own path, including establishing the Housing Studies Association bursary fund in 2011 which has support over 50 scholars in its seven year history. For these reasons and more, it is only fitting that John has now been recognised as one of the UKs leading social scientists”
